Fermented Foods

Fermented Foods:

No doubt you've heard the hype around fermented foods, such a sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir and kimchi. But what are the real benefits of these health foods?

Probiotics. All of the foods mentioned above are loaded with gut healing bacteria that are essential for maintaining and healing gut flora.

The benefits of consuming probiotics include; improving intestinal tract health, enhancing the immune system, synthesizing and enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients, and reducing symptoms of lactose intolerance. 70 percent of the immune system lies in the intestine, so nurturing bowel immunity with probiotic bacteria keeps the intestinal tract healthy.

Improves Digestion. Fermentation helps break down nutrients into more easily digestible forms, while having enough digestive enzymes helps to further break down and absorb the foods you eat. Absorbing these nutrients are vital to optimal health.

Lactose Intolerance. Consuming fermented dairy products converts lactose, the milk sugar that many cannot tolerate, into digestible lactic acid. Organic fermented dairy also helps to increase magnesium levels. Magnesium is a common deficiency in people with lactose intolerance, and other digestive tract disorders such as Celiac and Crohn's disease.

These are just a few of the many benefits of consuming fermented foods!

Gut health is extremely important to your overall wellbeing. As Hippocrates said "All disease begins in the gut." and how true he was! Lack of healthy gut bacteria prevents our bodies from properly absorbing the nutrients we eat or eliminating toxins from our body. Healthy gut flora is also a key factor in hormonal balance! For example, estrogen is directly effected by the state of our gut as there are certain bacteria called estrobolome that produces and breaks down estrogen in the GI tract.

Support your gut health by adding in fermented foods to your diet, (Unless you have a high histamine response, but more on that in another post!) taking active culture probiotics, and eliminating processed foods from your diet. Your whole body will benefit!
